Endangered Instrument Bursary Scheme

The Wandsworth Music Academy (WMA) Endangered Instrument Bursary Scheme offers up to 2 years of fully funded support to help young musicians learn instruments that are currently underrepresented in our orchestras and ensembles. The aim is to improve access, encourage uptake, and strengthen ensemble balance.

For September 2026 we are offering bursaries for the following endangered instruments:

  • Bassoon
  • French Horn
  • Viola
  • Double Bass
  • Tuba

The aim of the bursary is to fast-track talented young musicians into WMA’s senior ensembles on an endangered instrument.

The bursary is designed for students who:

  • Already play a related musical instrument
  • Demonstrate strong musical potential and commitment on their instrument

The bursary lasts for up to 2 years and includes:

  • Free instrument hire.
  • Free instrumental lessons at WMA Sat or WMA Wed (lessons will commence mid-September 2026).
  • Free WMA ensemble membership (attendance is compulsory at appropriate WMA ensembles).

Applicants must:

  • Be in Year 6 to Year 9 from 1 September 2026
  • Attend a state-funded school in Wandsworth or the Wandsworth Music Academy.
  • Already play an instrument from the same instrument family e.g.
    • clarinet/ saxophone = bassoon
    • Trumpet/ trombone = French horn or tuba
    • Violin/ Cello = viola/ double bass
  • Demonstrate strong musical potential and commitment
  • Not already be learning one of the endangered instruments
  • Be able to attend the Wandsworth Music Academy on Saturday and/or Wednesday.

At the end of the 2-year funding period students are expected to:

  • Continue learning the endangered instrument at WMA
  • Remain members of relevant WMA ensembles
    • Please note standard tuition fees will apply after the 2 year bursary (scholarships and further bursaries may be available for families in receipt of free school meals or pupil premium)

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 1 July 2026.

Our funds are limited and decisions take into account a combination of; financial need, commitment, musical potential, and the ability to make a positive contribution to, and take full benefit from activities at WMA. 

We will be in touch towards the end of June if your application has been shortlisted. 

Successful bursary pupils will commence lessons in September and are subject to regular reviews through reports and performances to ensure all criteria are being met.
