Young Musician of the Year
Wandsworth Young Musician of the Year
We are delighted to announce that the 11th Wandsworth Young Musician of the Year is scheduled for *May 2021 and we are now accepting applications. This is a brilliant chance for the borough’s musicians to perform and have fun showing off what you have been working on!
As we enter a new decade for the competition, and with ever changing circumstances, we have made some important updates and additions!
We are excited to introduce our new Ensemble Category. Chamber ensembles of 3 – 10 instrumentalists / vocalists can enter the competition and we are very much looking forward to seeing what exciting groups and bands our borough has to offer!
Junior and Senior applicants will now be split in to 2 separate solo categories and is open to all solo instruments (including electric) and vocalists.
The competition will be held in 2 rounds and finalists will be selected from each of the 3 categories in Round 1. Awards and prizes will be presented at the end of 3 separate finals in July 2021 to the Junior, Senior and Ensemble winners.
This year, Round 1 will take place through video submission performances. Our adjudicator will review the submissions to choose 5 entries from each category to progress to the finals. Although Round 1 performances are unable to take place live, we will be showcasing them for the public to view on our social media pages and website.
Depending on restrictions, the final in July will either take place in front of a live audience or be live streamed on our YouTube page if an audience is not permitted.
This event showcases and celebrates Wandsworth’s young musicians by providing a platform to perform and receive feedback from a prestigious musician.
Musicians who are either resident in Wandsworth, attend a school in the borough or the Wandsworth Music Academy are able to apply. There are 3 categories:
Junior Category: Age 12 or under on 31st Aug 2021. The recommended minimum standard for the Junior category is grade 3-4 or equivalent.
Senior Category: Age 18 or under on 31st Aug 2021. The recommended minimum standard for the Senior category is grade 5+ or equivalent.
The Junior and Senior Categories are open to all solo instrumentalists and vocalists.
*In light of the current lockdown, entries for Round 1 no longer need to have live accompaniment. Performing to backing tracks will be accepted and if this is not possible, unaccompanied submissions can also be entered. If playing unaccompanied, choosing repertoire that is specifically written to be unaccompanied is suggested although not compulsory.
Please note that finalists from the solo categories will be expected to play to live accompaniment at the July 2021 Final.
In the solo categories, entrants shall play no more than one type of instrument in their performance (unless a vocalist is accompanying them self on guitar or piano).
Ensemble Category: Age 18 or under on the 31st Aug 2021. Open to small ensembles of 3 to 10 members. The recommended minimum standard for the Ensemble category is grade 5+ or equivalent. Ensembles should be student led and perform without a conductor.
*Due to current restrictions, spilt screen video entries will be accepted if it is not possible to rehearse and perform together in the same space before the submission deadline.
All rounds of the competition will be available for the public to view online and we strongly encourage all participants to watch and support other performers throughout the competition period.
