As an independent and inclusive charity, Wandsworth Music delivers excellence in music education and performance to more than 8,000 children a year. We provide opportunities for young people to learn musical instruments and sing; perform in a range of ensembles and choirs; work and perform alongside acclaimed professional musicians and ensembles, and most importantly develop a lifelong love of music!

The Board of Trustees plays a vital role in offering expertise, advice, support and advocacy to Wandsworth Music. We are passionately committed to raising the profile of high quality music making for children and young people across Wandsworth.

We are particularly keen to attract applicants who have a background and/ or interest in fundraising, philanthropy, and/or marketing. We would also be pleased to receive applications from people with an interest or background in music, arts, or education, or those with a personal or family experience of using our services.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are currently underrepresented at board level, including people with disabilities and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

The role of Trustee is a voluntary position with no paid salary and entails:

  • Attending approximately 4 board meetings per year. Meetings generally last 2-3 hours (typically evenings).
  • Leading or supporting on the development of an appropriate area of strategy (e.g. fundraising).
  • Actively working on 1-2 projects per year, in consultation with the operational team lead by the Chief Executive Officer. Part of this is being available and responsive on e-mails and WhatsApp messages to respond to ad-hoc queries. Expected time commitment is 1 to 2 hours per week.

Successful candidates will need to demonstrate the following:

  • A keen passion, lived experience or knowledge of music and the arts, especially in relation to music education for children and young people.
  • A strong commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI).
  • Strong communication skills.

Desired Experience / Skills

The following experience and skills are desired and valued, but not mandatory for the role:

  • Experience of working as part of a committee or board.
  • An appreciation of the legal duties and responsibilities of being a charity trustee.
  • Networking capabilities that can bring benefits to the charity.
